We've lost our leader. The heart of this Race.

Jack McKaigOur hearts are heavy as we mourn the man that brought so many people, from so many places, together through this race. He appreciated everyone, Skiers, volunteers, and spectators alike. As his daughter Heather has said "Love is not a big enough word for how [Jack] felt about this race."

In the past several days, so many fond memories of Jack and this race have been shared. We're sure he has been able to enjoy hearing them from that great 50k finish line in the sky.

Thank you for your kind words during this time.

Beth McKaig & Family, and the White Pine Stampede Committee

Jack McKaigWELCOME to the White Pine Stampede

Since 1977, cross country skiers from all over the country have reserved the first Saturday in February for the White Pine Stampede event. They descend on Antrim County, racing in either the 50K, 20K, or 10K fun event, all of which take them through the beautiful countryside between Mancelona and Bellaire.

Forty years of families racing together, or volunteering together, make the White Pine a truly unique event. The communities come together to put on an event that is not only fun, but raises money for a worthwhile cause, the Children’s Hospital of Michigan Foundation. To date, more than $103,000.00 has gone to the Ophthalmology Department of the hospital.

WPS Finish

The competitors in the 50K and 20K races are divided into classifications based on the style of skiing, (classic or freestyle), gender and age.  Awards will be given to the TOP THREE FINISHERS in each class.

All three events start at Mancelona High School.  Prior to the race, participants may utilize the common area of the school for preparing, waxing, or enjoying a pancake or two before tackling the trail.  Warm ups will be transported and made available to racers at your finish.  Transportation will be available to return you to your car in the school parking lot.

We look forward to seeing old friends again and making new friends.  The  race committee and the communities of Mancelona and Bellaire welcome you to join us on the first Saturday of February.  Become a part of our tradition.

Shorts Brewing Company

After the race, participants are invited to the Shanty Creek Summit Center, where the races end, for the SHORT’S BREWING  POST RACE COOL DOWN.  A sampling of Short’s product, together with snacks, will be available for all as the race events of the day are discussed with friends and family while viewing a slideshow of race highlights.  Doors will open at 1:30 PM for the post-race cooldown, and The SHORT’S BREWING AWARDS CEREMONY will begin promptly at 3:30 PM in the same room.  Winner or not, join us for a continuation of the festivities.
